Message from the Director

Ruth Hopkins

At Carter G. Woodson School, we believe that our future is tied to our children,  and that we must prepare our children to handle the challenges of our world  when they are adults.

First and foremost, we believe that every child can achieve success.

Our efforts build on the legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who showed that people of color could achieve what others would deem unattainable.

Human compassion has been our cornerstone for creating a learning community across race and culture. Our teaching and administrative professionals, parents and the community of Winston-Salem collaborate to create an environment where academic achievement is the norm, not the exception.

Over the course of our 20 years as a publicly funded charter school, we have created a nurturing, student- and parent-friendly environment that has inspired confidence in our young people. Combined with rigorous, personalized instruction, our approach to education has become a formula for student success.

The growth and transformation of our students inspires me to never lose sight of our mission, our obligation and our responsibility to give our children the tools they need to achieve the desires of their hearts.

We walk with our students as they step into their destinies, knowing that they are well prepared to fully embrace the success that awaits them.
