Dress Code Policy

Carter G. Woodson School uniforms are mandatory for all grades.

DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (K-5)

GIRLS (GRADES K-5)
All young ladies in elementary school (K-5) are required to wear a navy blue skirt and a white, long-sleeved or short-sleeved blouse. They may wear navy blue jumpers, blue split skirts and white blouses. They may also wear navy blue pants during the cooler weather and knee length shorts during the hot weather.

The blouse may not be low cut. The skirt must be worn midway down the lower part of the leg.

No mini-skirts, dresses with splits that ride up the thigh when seated, or short pants are allowed at any time, (including school-sponsored functions).

Girls may wear a white or navy blue sweater this year as a part of the school uniform.

No sweaters or jackets with hoods may be worn as a part of the school uniform.

Shoes must be clean and proper. Shoes must be dark (i.e., blue or black). No sandals open toe shoes, bowling shoes or athletic shoes. All shoes must be flat (no heels allowed in the elementary setting).

Socks and tights must be worn at all times. Girls may not wear footies. Girls must wear tights, blue or white, or knee length socks or crew socks. No footless tights may be worn under skirts or dresses.

Hair must be neat and promote modesty in appearance.

Jewelry must be modest and becoming of uniform. No big earrings, wrist bands, naval rings or nose rings are to be worn at any time. (Large earrings will be confiscated).

Fingernails must be clean and neatly trimmed. Modest nail polish that is becoming of the uniform may be worn.

NO STUDENT MAY CHANGE OUT OF UNIFORM
BEFORE LEAVING THE CGWS CAMPUS.

BOYS (Grades K-5)
All elementary young men (K-5), are required to wear navy blue slacks or dress pants, a white long sleeve dress shirt, or a short sleeve shirt preferably with a button down collar. Polo shirts are acceptable in the elementary setting. Also required, is a navy blue full tie or navy blue clip-on tie. (A clip-on tie is less expensive, easier to manage and facilitates uniformity).

Elementary young men may purchase a navy blue sweater or a navy blue jacket to wear as a part of their uniform.

No sweaters or jackets with hoods are allowed this year as a part of the uniform.

Shoes must be clean and polished at all times. All young men are required to wear dark color loafers, dress shoes, or lace-up oxfords. Boots of any style are not permitted on the campus of Carter G. Woodson School.

Sneakers or athletic shoes of any kind ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE WORN WITH THE UNIFORM.

Hair must be neatly combed and trimmed. “Twisties” or locks are allowed and are left up to the discretion of the Director.

No dark glasses, hats, “grills” (mouth decoration), or earrings. These items may not be worn at any time while school is in session, this also includes the after school program.

DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Young Men
All high school and middle school students are expected to purchase the required school uniform.

Parents may use a variety of ways to purchase all or parts of the school uniform. They may shop locally for the parts of the school uniform at Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney, Sears, Roses, local department stores or local Goodwill and Thrift shops.

Parents also have the option to buy the school uniform from Ambassador’s Uniforms by calling 1-800-711-5885 or ordering online at www.ambassadoruniform.com.

The Carter G. Woodson School will provide you with the school emblem (logo) free to put on your child’s school jacket after you have shown proof of purchase of the jacket.

The CGWS school uniform consists of the following items for young men:

  • a navy blue school jacket with school coat of arms
  • khaki pants
  • blue tie
  • dark socks
  • a white shirt with short or long sleeves.

All young men are required to wear dark color loafers, dress shoes, or lace-up oxfords. Boots of any style are not permitted on the campus of Carter G. Woodson. Shoes must be clean and polished at all times.

  • white blouse with a career collar

Shoes must be clean and proper. Shoes must be dark (i.e. blue or black). No sandals open toe shoes, bowling shoes or athletic shoes. All shoes must be flat (no heels allowed in the elementary setting). Socks and tights must be worn at all times. Girls may not wear footies. High School girls are expected to wear knee length white socks or crew socks. No footless tights may be worn under skirts or dresses.

Hair must be neat and promote modesty in appearance.

Jewelry must be modest and becoming of uniform. No big earrings, wrist bands, naval rings or nose rings are to be worn at any time. (Large earrings will be confiscated).

Coloring of hair with extreme colors is discouraged. Students will be asked to take the colors out. This is viewed as a distraction to the population.

Any student, who fails to comply with the Dress Code Policy adopted by The Carter G. Woodson School Board of Directors, is subject to the appropriate disciplinary procedures.

All parents enrolling their students at Carter G. Woodson School should fully comprehend the importance of this policy and be willing to comply 100% with its guidelines.
