Kindergarten-6th Grade

Elementary School

Carter G. Woodson School K–6 curriculum provides an excellent foundation of learning and thorough preparation for the upper grades. At Carter G. Woodson School, we utilize several different teaching methods to ensure that all of our students acquire grade-level proficient skills in Reading, Spelling, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Daily reinforcement of character development and outdoor play (weather permitting) as well as weekly courses in Technology, Art, Music, and Physical Education round out the K–6 curriculum. In grades K-6, we utilize iReady, Curriculum Associates, American Reading Company (ARC) and Success For All (SFA) as curricular products to aid our instruction of our students.

We Work With Families

At CGW, we work with our families as a partnership to help our students learn concepts in the K–6 years. Most CGW kindergartners are reading by January. Our curriculum gives students the knowledge and continual practice they need to master content and advance to the next level.

At CGW, we follow the educational philosophy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. We directly teach history and culture as the foundation for educating our students. At CGW, we follow the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Curriculum.
