Choosing Carter G. Woodson School

We understand the importance of making the best decision when it comes to enrolling your student in school. That is why we’ve taken the time to answer a few important questions to help you decide if Carter G. Woodson is a good fit for you and your student.

  • Education and citizenship are our vital concerns. The Carter G. Woodson School is a place where every child is taught in a challenge-friendly, nurturing, and constructive learning environment. At Carter G. Woodson, every child is respected and is expected to learn, grow, and be the best he or she can be.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, we follow all the education requirements dictated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Therefore, we follow the standard course of study and Common Core. As a charter school, we are mandated to be innovative to reach our academic targets. We implore a culturally relevant and student-centered approach in our curriculum which highlights our students  heritage instead of placing their heritage at the periphery of the program. We place our students' backgrounds within its proper socio-historical context. Research has shown that such a direct curriculum helps children to become even better academic students.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, we train our staff to employ different teaching styles to accommodate how children learn. All teachers use these research-based strategies. Our Curriculum Coordinator monitors teachers to ensure that all teachers differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of the students.

  • Yes. We offer AP courses. Currently, we are offering AP US History. In addition, about 25% of our high school students are dually enrolled and taking college courses at Forsyth Technical Community College. Community college courses are counted as AP courses on student transcripts.

  • Carter G. Woodson requires that teachers attend bi-weekly in-house professional development. In addition, we have a partnership with the Department of Education at Winston Salem State University for additional professional development throughout the year.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, we have wireless internet for the entire campus. We have two full-computer labs. In addition, we use iPads and tablets. Plus, we have two mobile carts of laptops, with a total of 50 laptops. All teachers have computers and monitors in their rooms. In addition, all high school students take at least one course online.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, our top students are very focused and competitive. Many of our top students participate in the dual enrollment program, whereby they are taking college courses at Forsyth Technical Community College. They are also accepted at some of the best colleges in the State of North Carolina.

  • School hours are 7:30am to 3:05pm.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, we offer several after-school activities. We offer dance, music, art, and poetry programs after school.

  • Carter G. Woodson offers an intervention block of tutorial services with students as preparation for End-of-Grade Testing. This service is offered during the school day.

  • At Carter G. Woodson, we prepare all of our students for a Future-Ready high school program. Future Ready is the designated course load for high school students desiring to enter into a four-year university. Even though many students have other career aspirations, we prepare all of our students, academically, for the Future-Ready Curriculum. In addition, we have a director of Guidance Services that assists all students in completing Financial Aid information, completing college applications and finding scholarship money.

Carter G. Woodson School is an independent, college-preparatory, public-charter school that serves students grades k-12 from North Carolina. Prospective students complete an application for admission which is open to all students.
