Fall 2021-2022

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s)

Right now, legally, we are not allowed to offer virtual for the 2021-2022 school year. If the North Carolina legislature passes a law that allows virtual learning or hybrid learning, CGW is prepared to provide families a virtual online option as well as a flexible option of in-person and online learning for our students.

In particular, we know that some of our high school students have jobs and other responsibilities, and this will allow students to take advantage of both systems. Currently, CGW is preparing for all students to return to school for in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year. We will provide a calendar for the 2021-2022 school year after the Board approves the calendar.

Continuous Learning Summer 2021

Carter G. Woodson School is providing continuous learning for grades K-12. Continuous learning will be from June 21 – July 30th. There will be a virtual option for students as well. CGW will continue to follow all CDC safety protocols during our continuous learning program. Students and staff will wear masks. Staff and students will practice social distancing. There will be enhanced cleaning as well.

The continuous learning program will be engaging and fun. There will be field trips. Students will be learning computer coding and computer hardware. There will be other activities such as P.E., art, and music. Students will continue to learn reading, science, and math. This is a great opportunity to continue learning. High school students will have the opportunity to earn credits in our credit recovery program. Complete this survey if you want in-person or online.  The school day will be from 8:30 – 12:30 pm.

Computer Coding

CGW is training all of our teachers on computer science across grade levels and curricula. Currently, there are tens of thousands of computer science jobs that are left unfilled. We are training our teachers to teach computer science starting in Kindergarten. We have bought robotic kits. We are a full one-to-one school. Whereby, all of our students have access to a computer. In addition, we are purchasing more smartboards for classrooms. We are completely integrating technology in our curriculum. We are excited for the future.

Covid-19

COVID-19 is still a threat. Even though more people are getting vaccinated, there are still many unknowns. We are anticipating that staff and students will continue to wear masks in the fall. In addition, we are ready to continue to practice social distancing. The social distancing requirements can change, but we are prepared to continue a hybrid learning schedule or have students in-person without social distancing. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow CDC protocols. CGW will continue to have a full-time nurse on staff.

Calendar Scheduling

CGW is prepared to provide families a virtual online option as well as a flexible option of in-person and online learning for high school students. Some of our high school students have jobs and other responsibilities, and this will allow students to take advantage of both systems. CGW will provide a calendar for the 2021-2022 school year after the Board approves the calendar.

Social & Emotional Support

CGW will invest in therapists for students and staff. The CGW community has suffered emotionally during this pandemic. We want to ensure that students and staff can speak with licensed therapists about any issue that impacts learning and teaching.

Full STEAM Ahead

CGW is a full S.T.E.A.A.M School. We offer a rigorous science and technology curriculum. CGW is teaching computer science and we are investing in technology. CGW will continue our great art program with partnerships with the Sawtooth School of Visual Arts. Our agriculture program is expanding. We have developed partnerships with North Carolina A&T State University. Our math program is preparing students for the university. In our high school program, we plan to offer courses in computer science, social media, gaming, and Bitcoin. The future is here. CGW is ready to take your child to the next level.
