Music Can Inspire And Create Better Students
The Carter G. Woodson School offers beginning band, jazz band, and marching band. In addition to teaching students how to play an instrument and to read music, the band program teaches students valuable life skills. Teamwork, having a strong work ethic, timeliness and time management, preparedness, public speaking (self-confidence), and and leadership are just a few of those skills. There is also a strong correlation between students excelling in music and also in core subjects.
The CGW Band program has been under the direction of C. Michael Hinson since 2004. Mr. Hinson is a professional musician and jazz recording artist.

ORCHESTRA
Discover The Joy Of Making Music Together
This orchestra program was created to give our students an opportunity to grow mentally, emotionally, and academically by learning to play a string instrument and achieving musical goals in the community. In this music program students learn Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass from elementary to high school.
The inclusive environment of the Carter G. Woodson School orchestra offers students the opportunity to hone their musical talents while fostering teamwork and discipline. From classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions, our repertoire spans genres, ensuring a rich and diverse cross-cultural musical experience. In the orchestra program, every note played resonates with passion and purpose. Carter G. Woodson School has dynamic community partnership with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Ameri-Corps Artists, and the local Winston-Salem public symphony.

CGW Recording Studio
The Carter G. Woodson School encourages students to express themselves through creativity and collaboration. High School band students will have the opportunity to compose and record their own music collaboration. They will learn about the songwriting/recording process from concept, song arrangement and learning, recording, post-production, all the way to marketing, sales, and distribution.
The Spring 2024 High School Band was the first to use the studio. They composed and recorded their collaboration titled, “KYDJEMS”.
