Educating Our Students

Carter G. Woodson’s educational model is built upon educating the whole child. Every day we educate students through real-world experiences with the importance of timeless values, such as hard work, respect, decorum, mental fortitude and humility. We stand boldly in our belief that character education is critical for the development of children. Most importantly, we are intentional in educating children to become productive citizens in society. Education is a pathway to economic freedom. It is the foundation of our political-economy in America. We strive to make academic excellence the standard. We strive to excel not to equal.

OUTCOMES REVIEW: CGWS has been designated as CLT (Continually Low Performing): NC Statutes defines “a Continually Low Performing School as a school that has received State-mandated assistance and has been designated by the NC State Board of Education as low performing for at least two of three consecutive years.”
*In the 2012-2013 academic year, North Carolina switched to the Common Core Standards. The statewide composite for this year was 44.7%. This was also the last year before the release of school performance grades, which were implemented in the 2013-2014 academic year.
**In 2018, North Carolina discontinued use of the A+NG school performance grade distinction so that the highest grade attainable became the A.

Our Growth Target

At Carter G. Woodson, we stand by best practices in teaching. Academically, our students are required to take all state End-of-Course and End-of-Grade tests. For the last five years, Carter G. Woodson has met and/or exceeded all of our growth targets. Here at our school, we focus on growing our students academically. We mark our success through academic growth. The state of North Carolina measures academic success by student growth and student proficiency, which is the number of students that pass End-of-Course and End-of-Grade tests.

Every district and charter school receives an A-F letter grade which is based 80 percent on the school’s achievement score and 20 percent on students’ academic growth. Even though North Carolina emphasizes how many students pass the End-of-Grade and End-of-Course Tests, at Carter G. Woodson, we focus on every student growing and improving academically from year-to-year, no matter where they started academically. For the 2017-2018 school year, we had some of the greatest academic growth of any school in North Carolina.
