POETRY

At Carter G. Woodson, we understand our historical heritage as wordsmiths, poets, and griots. We carry power with our words. Poetry is intentionally infused into our curriculum. We teach poetry K-12. Our high school poetry club has participated in local poetry competitions. For the past two years, Carter G. Woodson’s high school poetry team placed first in the Twin City Poetry Slams. Several of our high school poets have competed in local and national poetry competitions. Many of our high school poets have been recognized locally and nationally.

At Carter G. Woodson, we have Poetry Cafes, whereby students can perform their poetry for students and parents. As a school community, we reflect the following sentiments by the late great Maya Angelou:

“If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities”.

- Maya Angelou
