From the beginning, Carter G. Woodson School has been dedicated to providing the best educational experience for children. Much has changed at Carter G. Woodson School since we first opened our doors in 1997. From the materialization of a few parents’ dreams, we have grown into being a leader as the school of choice for parents and students seeking a quality, tuition-free public education that promotes cultural pride, academic excellence, discipline, and traditional values.
We are proud of our achievements and thankful to every member of our school community that has contributed to our growth and development. We are serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Every year, we are meeting and exceeding our academic growth targets. We are excited to follow the success of our graduates who are continuing their education at some of America’s finest colleges and universities.
At CGW, we value the partnerships that support academic excellence. Our administrators, teachers, parents, and community supporters have built an environment of cultural pride, academic achievement, discipline, and structure that motivates every student we serve. We have created a safe, forward-driven school environment that graduates students who are academically, emotionally, culturally, and socially prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Our march forward is bound to a powerful cultural heritage that teaches education produces justice and equality. Through the years, we have stood the test of fortitude attributed to our founder, civil rights icon, Hazel Mack. We are intentional with our actions and purpose. Carter G. Woodson stands boldly in education to assert that cultural heritage and discipline are forged together to produce academic excellence. Our ancestral heritage and pride demand that we continue with our innovative and culturally relevant curriculum; we are expanding into agricultural sciences, with our school farm. We will continue to strengthen our focus on math and science and embrace new initiatives that will distinguish CGW as a leader in public education in North Carolina. Our performance arts program is ever expanding with more partnerships.
I am proud to be part of this great legacy, and I extend to you an invitation to join this movement. My door is always open. Please contact me with your questions, ideas, or concerns. Explore our website. Visit our school. Meet our staff and teachers. You will see the love, the commitment to excellence, the family-oriented environment, and how CGW can make a positive difference in your children’s education. We strive to excel, not to equal.
